Abstract

Title:A mother's experience of postpartum depression and its impact on child care : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Postpartum depression is a mental disorder that can occur in mothers after childbirth. It is a serious condition that can significantly affect the lives of new parents, the mother-child bonding process, and the child's development. Purpose: This diploma work explored the most common feelings experienced by mothers with postpartum depression, the impact of postpartum depression on the formation of maternal bonds with a child, and its influence on the care and development of the child. Methods: For the preparation of the diploma work, we employed a descriptive method with a literature review. The literature search took place from February 2024 to July 2024, reviewing literature from the CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases and the online portal DiKUL. Results: The results of our literature review demonstrate that postpartum depression is a complex and multidimensional issue related to the emotional difficulties that new mothers face after childbirth. It is a serious condition that requires appropriate attention, but it is entirely possible to overcome this challenge with the right treatment and support. Discussion and conclusion: Postpartum depression is a serious but often overlooked issue that can have profound impacts on new mothers and their newborns. Awareness of this condition is crucial, as early recognition and treatment can significantly contribute to recovery and improve quality of life for both the mother and child. Thus, it is important to develop genuine and accessible support systems for women facing postpartum depression, which include educating family members, friends, and healthcare professionals about the condition. With support and appropriate treatment, mothers can overcome the challenges posed by postpartum depression and focus on their health and the well-being of their children.
