The curriculum for teaching Slovene in Slovenia, last revised in the 1990s, needs updating in light of advances in information technology, European integration, and globalization. This paper complements the national guidelines for the upcoming curriculum reform, Izhodišča za prenovo učnih načrtov v osnovni in srednji šoli, by examining the impacts of new technologies and evolving communication needs on language education. We argue for the necessity of preparing for the implications of generative artificial intelligence and emphasize the importance of open educational resources and innovative, problem-based digital solutions. We advocate for empowering teachers to not only utilize but also participate in the creation of language resources, tools, and technologies. With shifts in communication practices, such as increased informality and anonymity, language education must adapt to include the development of stylistic skills and critical judgment capabilities. The significance of the Slovene language in education extends beyond mere language acquisition; it influences student performance across other subjects and their general knowledge. Consequently, we underscore the need for a fundamental reform in the training of Slovene language teachers to more effectively incorporate and apply new teaching and assessment methods in the future.
