Humans spend most of their time indoors. Children and employees in education, a large part of this time spend in school. According to many studies, workspace is and its microclimate are important factor in education. As part of my master's thesis, I determined thermal comfort, noise and lighting in various classrooms and common areas of Boštanj Elementary School.
I measured temperature, relative humidity, air flow, brightness and noise. To perform the measurements, I used the following instruments: HOBO Temperature/RH Data Logger MX23O1A, anemometer Testo 445 with tri-function probe, electronic light meter testo 545 and sound level meter Brüel & Kjær, type 2260 Investigator.
Measurements at the Boštanj Primary School showed that the predicted mean value (PMV) was between -1 and 1, which indicates a favorable working and learning environment. All results of noise measurement were lower than the upper warning value for exposure during an 8-hour working day, i.e. 85 db(A). However, the permissible equivalent level of noise during classes was exceeded in all rooms, except for the library. The school premises were adequately lit with a combination of daylight and artificial light.
