Abstract
V kronološkem redu želim prikazati in predstaviti razlike in posebnosti teh protez v vsakem obdobju. Metode dela: Opravljen je bil sistematični pregled literature na temo dentalnih protez in zgodovine zobnoprotetičnih nadomestkov. Predstavila sem strokovno in znanstveno literaturo v angleškem in slovenskem jeziku iz bibliografskih baz PubMed, ScienceDirect in Google Scholar. Rezultati: V diplomskem delu najprej opisujemo brezzobost, povzročitelje brezzobosti, končno zgodovino in razvoj totalne proteze.

Title:History of complete dentures : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Total removable dentures are a type of denture and are one of the oldest types of dentures dating back to the 7th century BC. No matter how old we get, people will always need teeth to bite, grind, tear and eat a variety of foods. A total removable denture are dental prosthetics that are made when a patient no longer has any teeth. Total removable dentures are made of polymethyl methacrylate or polymethyl methacrylate and artificial teeth. Polymethyl methacrylate is a thermoplastic polymer obtained by polymerising methyl methacrylate monomers and acrylate powder. In contrast to implants, crowns or dentures, which are fixed in the patient's mouth, a total denture is removable, meaning that it can be taken out of the mouth at any time. Of course, there are also combination removable dentures that are made in conjunction with implants, but these will not be discussed in this paper. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to present the development and history of the total removable denture, through which the design and appearance have changed over time. We will present the differences of these prostheses in each period in chronological order. Methods: A systematic review of professional and scientific literature on dentures and the history of prosthetic restorations in English and Slovenian was carried out. The sources were searched via the bibilographic databases PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. Results: The thesis first describes tooth loss, the causes of tooth loss and finally the history and development of the total removable denture. The focus is on the development of the materials themselves, which have been used for decades and centuries. Discussion and conclusion: Nowadays, dentures are usually made in the traditional way. However, several computer-aided design and manufacturing systems and devices are already being developed and are increasingly in the profession and represent the future of dentistry. Polymethyl methacrylate is still the most commonly used material since the 19th century. In the future, other materials may be found to replace polymethyl methacrylate, just as polymethyl methacrylate has replaced the materials that were used to make total dentures before it.
