The goal of the final seminar work is to observe the development of the Nativity motif in the period of Early Christian Art and at the same time identify the cultural and historical circumstances that stimulated the development of this motif. The assignment is based on the assumption that in depicting the motif, Christian Art did not blindly followed the canonical writings of the Old and New Testaments, but sought inspiration from Apocryphal texts and drew heavily on, informed and interpreted the theological debates highlighted by the Ecumenical Councils. Through a selection of images and their iconographic analysis, the thesis reveals and explains the differences that have been expressed in the depiction of the motif of the Nativity in the West and the East.
