The scientific monograph Limits of the Responsibility to Protect provides an insight into the development of the Responsibility to Protect principle and highlights the limitations that we need to be aware of when applying it. Almost twenty years have passed since the adoption of this principle at the United Nations World Summit in 2005. During this time, a number of crises around the world have highlighted some of the limitations of this principle, while at the same time the development of modern views on the understanding of international law has crystallised some other shortcomings, which are the subject of this scholarly monograph. It aims to broaden the debate on this principle and to provide a scholarly basis and arguments for deciding in which cases and how to apply this principle effectively in practice. The monograph comprises nine chapters covering the whole spectrum of the topic, from presenting examples of the (un)successful application of the principle in the resolution of global crises to raising awareness of contemporary legal issues that need to be included in the interpretation of the principle. The chapters focus on the debate on the Responsibility to Protect principle in the context of the United Nations and examine the responsibilities of States and the international community within the three-pillar structure of the principle. One of the main focuses of the monograph's chapters is the conduct of the UN Security Council, which highlights the challenges of the veto power of the permanent members and the long-awaited reform of the UN. The Security Council, given that it often finds itself unable to act in a timely and decisive manner.
