The following assignment presents a comprehensive treatment of the gothic wall painting, which was discovered by probing in 2015. The painting, which depicts the March and Tribute of the Holy Three Kings, stretches over the entire northern wall of the Church of St. Lenart on the hill above Mala Ligojna in the Municipality of Vrhnika.
The theoretical part includes an art-historical insight into the church, an iconographic description of the painting on the north wall, an overview of the painting technology and an inventory of the condition before the intervention. The conservation-restoration program of the intervention, on which the implementation part is based, is given.
The implementation part describes the conservation-restoration intervention on the painting, which includes the removal of all subsequent layers, the consolidation and stabilization of the preserved painting, and the plastering of missing gaps and cracks.
In the discussion, from an aesthetic point of view, the problem of the presentation of different historical layers and how newly applied mortar in larger gaps affects the overall image of the painting is treated. The possibilities of retouching the painting are discussed and instructions are given for further work in the church. In addition to the restored altars and the uncovered and restored painting of the presbytery in the future, the interior will need appropriate unification and meaningful presentation.
