Abstract

Title:Digitized childhood: preschool children’s practices and uses of digital media
Abstract:
In today's digitized world, preschool children are exposed to digital media and new technologies at every step. It is important that parents are aware of both the benefits and the risks they bring with them and that they make informed decisions about their use. In my diploma thesis, I research the practices and uses of digital media among preschool children. I am interested in which content children follow the most and which media and technologies they are most exposed to, what is the relationship between parents and their children and whether digital worlds are more interesting for children than classic games. I am looking for answers to these questions with the help of a qualitative research method, namely through interviews with parents of preschool children. From the analysis of the interviews, it is clear that television is still the most popular medium among children, and they prefer to watch entertaining content such as cartoons. The role of parents in limiting screen time and choosing appropriate content is important. There is a disconnect between parents and their children's use of digital media, precisely because of the restrictions parents put in place. This also affects the fact that classic play is still in the foreground, and the time children spend with digital media increases when parents do housework and in case of bad weather.
