Abstract

Title:
Linguistic political correctness and the language of journalists
Abstract:
Linguistic political correctness is the choice of linguistic expressions that promote greater inclusion in society and non-discrimination against minorities. In our master’s thesis, we examined the extent to which and how Slovenian journalists adhere to linguistic political correctness when reporting on events involving three topics: sexual orientation and gender identity; race and Roma; and age. We used two research methods: text analysis and interviews. For the text analysis, we covered six media outlets (24ur.com, Siol.net, MMC RTV Slovenia, Večer, N1 and Dnevnik) paying close attention to the terminology used for members of social minorities and their attributes. The analysis included 116 articles and yielded a total of 270 different terms and descriptions. We then conducted three semi-structured interviews with the authors of the texts analysed. The questionnaire was prepared in advance and had 12 starting points, and the interviews lasted on average 50 minutes. The text analysis and interviews showed that journalists generally follow the principles of linguistic political correctness in their work. Media texts that contain offensive and hostile terms for describing members of social minorities are not considered part of professional journalism. They believe that linguistic political correctness achieves its goal when used thoughtfully and in connection with the actual challenges faced by society.
