Abstract

Title:Sarajevo urbicide 1992-1996
Abstract:
The thesis explores the characteristics and ramifications of urbicide through an analysis of events during the siege of Sarajevo in 1992-1996. It highlights not only the destruction of the physical infrastructure, but also the deliberate destruction of the symbolic essence of the city and its cultural and social identity. The siege of Sarajevo is seen as an example of urbicide, in which the destruction of the urban environment acted as an instrument for the erasure of collective memory and social division. These objectives are placed in a broader political context and discussed in relation to different types of infrastructure.

Keywords:urbicide, Sarajevo, war, Bosnia and Herzegovina, collective memory, destruction of the city
