Limestones of the Karst represent big part of natural and cultural heritage but most of the limestone stone quarries are nowadays closed. With the intention to find out the depth of occurrence of the Kazlje limestone along with its characteristic and assess the further usage of the quarry did the company Marmor, Sežana d.d., company dug up a borehole in the abandoned Kazlje natural stone quarry. Dark limestones in the quarry belong to the Lipica formation and could be potentially used in the future for exploitation for natural stone. Based on macroscopic and microscopic analysis I divided the rocks in eight microfacies, that show evolution in the restricted and shelf lagoon environments. The rocks show some similarities with the grey limestones of Lipica formation and Tomaj limestone but based on the macro and micro characteristic I place them in the transition zone between grey limetones of Lipica formation and Tomaj limestone. The research has showed that the Kazlje limestone horizon in the quarry goes only to the depth of 6,40m. That means that the further usage of the quarry is questionable because the horizon is shallow and besides that the type of limestone changes throughout the succession which does not make the usage of bigger and undamaged pieces of natural stone possible.
