In this master's thesis, we analyze the teaching of literature in Slovenian language courses at the grammar school level. We review modern Slovenian and international perspectives on literary education and, based on these insights, design a survey for grammar school Slovenian language teachers to assess how literature is taught in Slovenian grammar schools. The thesis first establishes the fundamental objective of literature education at the grammar school level, followed by educational, functional, and pedagogical goals. We discuss the concept of literary competence (Žbogar 2019, 2020; Zajc 2019, 2023) and its evaluation methods (Žbogar 2022, 2023c), delve into literary reading and its various types (Žbogar 2014, 2021), and focus on the core didactic principles of grammar school literature instruction (Žbogar 2014) as well as the methodologies used (Žbogar 2007, 2013, 2023a, 2023b, 2023c). Within the framework of this thesis, we survey one hundred grammar school Slovenian language teachers. Ultimately, we synthesize the survey's findings and theoretical insights into recommendations that could be considered during curriculum revisions.
