Abstract

Title:Idea concept for the third passenger terminal of Ljubljana airport
Abstract:
The following thesis addresses the challenge of reducing car traffic at the airport terminal through strategic planning and integration of public transportation. The main goal of the thesis was to find an optimal solution for establishing a rail connection between Ljubljana, Ljubljana Airport, and Kranj. The thesis first deals with the analysis of the Ljubljana urban region, based on which the need for a rail connection between Ljubljana, the airport, and Kranj is established. It continues with the assessment of possible rail line configurations and identifies the optimal route. In the second part, the focus shifts to the dimensioning and planning of the airport terminal, which becomes a multimodal transportation hub. The design prioritizes efficient and convenient transfers between planes, trains, buses, shuttles, and other modes of transportation, thereby encouraging the use of public transportation and reducing dependence on private cars. In designing the terminal, special attention was given to the passenger experience. The design minimizes walking distances and floor level changes for passengers, allows intuitive orientation with natural light, and with its structural design and open floor plan, avoids creating bottlenecks for future capacity upgrades. The terminal’s form also serves as a presentational space for the first encounter of passengers with the culture and environment of their destination. Significant emphasis was placed on reducing the terminal’s environmental impact. This is achieved through the inclusion of sustainable design elements, such as ensuring natural lighting, using sustainable building materials, and an extensive green roof that contributes to cooling and reducing heat loss in the building
