The conducted research analyzed the following questions: what do personal and social identity represent and how are they formed? What is a mask and what symbolic meaning does it carry? Which artistic works address the theme of identity and masks? How can the theoretical knowledge obtained be applied in the practical implementation of the author’s project and serve the purpose of adaptation in a new sociocultural environment? The main thesis of the work can be outlined as the creation and comprehension of a new self-image (personal identity) through the application of masks and photography in self-representation.
The theoretical section of this work is presented in three chapters. The first chapter analyzes the concept of identity and self-representation according to the concept of G. Mead, who identifies two key aspects: ”me” and ”I.” The second chapter reveals the essence of the mask in the knowledge of our “I” and self-expression. The third chapter of this paper is devoted to the analysis of projects by photographers who use self-portraits and masks in their artistic activities. The second section of the master’s thesis is presented by a practical part, which describes the process of working on the author’s project Lichina.
