Cerklje na Gorenjskem is located at the junction of the Ljubljana Basin and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Like the rest of the world, it faces the increasing amount of municipal waste. The aim of this thesis is to study the situation of waste separation in the municipality of Cerklje na Gorenjskem and the awareness of its residents about waste separation. The European Union’s objectives and strategies have an impact on waste management in Slovenia and in the municipality. Despite the increasing quantity of waste, the proportion of separately collected waste increases as well, while the proportion of deposited waste decreases. Since 2016, the municipality's waste management has been managed by Javno podjetje Vodovod Kanalizacija Snaga d. o. o. (public utility company). It provides door-to-door collection, recycling banks, a collection centre and a mobile waste disposal facility. A field visit to the recycling banks has identified the problems with the management of the recycling banks in the hill area of the municipality. However, a survey has shown that the majority of the residents separate their waste. People are satisfied with their knowledge on waste separation, but it has turned out that only about half of the selected fractions has been separated correctly. Highly educated people have less difficulties in separating waste correctly, while there were no significant differences found between age groups.
