Health informatics appeared in general use globally in 1973, and its role encouraged progress in the development of information and communication technology. The process of introducing information and communication technology into healthcare is also underway in Slovenia. Some of the solutions that Slovenia has developed in this are eHealth and the introduction of patient portals.
In the theoretical part of the thesis, we presented the healthcare system, the process of informatization of Slovenian healthcare and the eHealth project. We provided a detailed description of selected patient portals, namely the IRIS patient portal the Health Lord patient portal. The empirical part of the thesis includes four survey questionnaires, intended for the users of selected patient portals and healthcare professionals.
From the analysis of the responses, we found that all the groups of respondents are generally satisfied with the use of patient portals, but there is room for improvement. We found several problems with both groups of portal users, who pointed out that doctors could respond more quickly, that the portals should be more adapted to older age groups, that the portals should be more transparent, and that medical results should be visible on them.
The thesis puts forward practical solutions offering a detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the selected patient portals, as reported by both users and healthcare professionals. The research results provide recommendations to improve the functionality of the portals.
