In my thesis I will explore the influence of an archaic method of remembering on art,
specifically the Memory Palace technique, which uses the visualisation of spatial
environments or architecture to enhance the retrieval of information. In the theoretical part of
the thesis, I will focus on the history of mnemonic techniques and their traditions, using
Frances A. Yates' book The Art of Memory, and relate their influence to contemporary
applications. I will also apply the method to my own works, which are intended to act as an
externalisation of internal memory images. The research will be concretely reflected in
objects that are established by light transitions and that intervene in their surroundings with a
subtle transparent materiality.
