In the thesis, the characteristics of modern locomotives, their development, and their use in the contemporary railway system are presented. The technical description includes the components of a modern electric locomotive that are essential for efficient operation. Modern propulsion systems, such as electric, battery-powered, hydrogen, and hybrid drives, as well as locomotive maintenance, are also discussed. The development from the first multi-system locomotives to modern high-performance locomotives is described. Furthermore, certain characteristics of passenger and freight train operations and the use of modern locomotives in Slovenia are also presented.
A comparative analysis of the characteristics of two different modern locomotives, namely the four-axle Alstom Traxx 3 MS locomotive and the six-axle Stadler Euro9000 locomotive, during a simulated drive on the second track of the Divača–Koper route is also conducted.
