Abstract

Title:The timeless popularity of the television series Friends: a reception study after three decades
Abstract:
The thriving of popular culture and the endless possibilities of accessibility and choice of media content have radically changed the nature of media consumption. The sitcom genre has outgrown its traditionality and standardized frameworks, surrendering to the rapid flow of digitization and hybridization. Despite the saturation of the media space and streaming services that have assumed the role of a new privatized all-in-one medium, one of the main cult TV series Friends remains at the very top of the media landscape, transcending generational and national boundaries. The life of six friends living in New York, their stories, the intertwining of relationships, experiences and traditional values, brings to the fore an open connection in friendship and love, overcoming everyday challenges, finding a career path and meaning in life, and creating a family with a simple humorous recipe. which won the hearts of viewers all over the world with its organic dynamics. The Friends series has long since surpassed the limits of its popularity in the 90s of the last century. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first broadcast of the first episode, so in my diploma thesis, with the help of focus groups, I will try to find out what is the driving force behind the iconic international popularity of the series Friends even today, after three decades.
