Data from the permanent sample plots of the Slovenia forest service was used to analyze beech quality structure of the acidophilic and sub-montane beech forest in forest management area Novo mesto. Quality structure determined on the harvested trees was used to convert quality grade of the tree into asortment structure. Share of the high quality trees was low and the quality structure was poor. The quality of the beech trees was positively influenced by the diameter at breast height, upper social stratum of a tree, presence in a optimal phase stand (large timber), stand basal area and the presence of maple in a stand. Quality was lower in damaged trees and on slopes with higher inclination. The highest percentage of quality trees was found in stands with more than 75 % of beech in their growing stock. Tree quality varied differently according to stand basal area.
