The purpose of the Master’s thesis was to appropriately create and design an integrated graphic image for the new Scout songbook Melodije do galaksije based on the existing songbook Strune do lune. The layout of the new songbook was intended to represent a content and design upgrade as well as the impression of the existing Strune do lune songbook.
The thesis researched the history of the book’s and songbook’s development, the importance of the integrated graphic image and its upgrade, and both the principles of layout design and the different typefaces usage. The experimental part of the thesis focused on designing the Melodije do galaksije songbook, a continuation and upgrade of the Scout songbook Strune do lune. The latter were achieved by carefully and thoroughly analysing the Strune do lune songbook. The obtained results were used as a basis for the integrated graphic design outline and the preparation for the layout of the new songbook’s content, as well as the design of its cover, which is supposed to complement the existing songbook’s cover in terms of design.
The analysis of the songbook was performed with a typometer, which was used to measure the typeface size, line spacing, and mirror size, defining the features of the typefaces and their variants’ usage as well as analysing the illustrations, pagination, chapters, and the cover design. The results were compared to the results of analyses of similar songbooks, which provided the foundation for designing the new songbook. With regard to the appointed outline, the songbook was designed using the Adobe InDesign programme and prepared for printing accordingly. The cover and illustrations were designed in Adobe Illustrator and placed in the layout. Before the final print, a test print was made to confirm the suitability of colours and the layout of the elements. The final corrections were followed by printing and binding the songbook, which was the final objective. The project resulted in a new songbook as an update of its predecessor in both content and design, while retaining the complementing elements.
