This bachelor’s thesis describes different reactions between the ligand xanthine and transition metal ions such as Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) with the addition of KSCN. The reactions were carried out in methanol and water by using an oil bath. Two of the reactions produced a coordination compound, in one four thiocyanate ions coordinated around the zinc, in the other two xanthine molecules coordinated around the zinc along two chloride ions. Both compounds have already been described in the literature. The resulting crystalline products were analyzed by IR spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray structural analysis.
