Abstract
Magistrsko delo skuša osvetliti vprašanja prevajanja epistemske modalnosti v znanstvenem diskurzu, natančneje v delu On the origin of species by means of natural selection, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life avtorja Charlesa Darwina.

Title:Epistemic modality in translations of On the origin of species
Abstract:
This master's thesis explores issues of translations of epistemic modality in scientific discourse, specifically in Charles Darwin's On the origin of species by means of natural selection, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life. In the theoretical part, we have described the types of modality, focusing on epistemic modality and the linguistic means by which it is expressed. For the analysis, a parallel corpus of examples of translations of epistemic modality in two Slovenian translations was created. The focus of the comparison was on whether the level of modality is either maintained, higher or lower. By comparing the changes to the original, we analyzed which of the Slovenian translations stayed more faithful to Darwin's original in this respect.

Keywords:modality, epistemic modality, Charles Darwin, scientific discourse, popular science discourse
