The Japanese writing system is very complex and different than the western writing systems. Because of this, new students of the language can often view the learning of Kanji as an insurmountable barrier. However, by organizing the process and using different learning methods, we can ease the initial burden on the student. The Japanese studies department at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, where they teach Japanese language and writing, also deals with this problem. The goal of this thesis is to explore different learning methods, whilst also focusing on the order of learning Kanji, which is a topic that hasn’t been extensively researched. In addition, the task is to clarify the problems on the current teaching/learning system and to seek solutions in the Japanese studies major. This contributes to the final goal of this thesis, finding recommendations for further teaching at the university.
