Abstract

Title:Planning and designing visual identity inspired by past design eras
Abstract:
Graphic design is all around us, and everywhere, we can connect its visual appearance to an era, style, or design movement from the past. This diploma work connects common points between them and explains their background. Even though most of the time, designers and audiences do not realize it, the rules, that dictate certain styles and designs, were created and implemented many years ago. The experimental part aimed to design a corporate identity concept for a theatrical institution and incorporate design elements and rules from past eras into poster design for its plays. This diploma work describes eras, styles, and design movements along with prime examples of posters, which express the time and place from which they originate. Authorial posters, designed under the influence of past eras, styles, and design movements are also analyzed, along with explained corporate identity elements and branding. The goal was to determine if it is possible to recognize past styles in modern designs. Final visuals were to be convincing enough, that subjects, who do not work in the graphic design field, recognize influences from the past while being modernized to fit today's standards.
