The thesis examines the events at the Ljubelj border crossing and its surroundings in the 20th century. Its history reflects broader processes such as state formation, wars, Nazi violence and economic changes, offering a valuable insight into the dynamics of border areas. The thesis touches upon the fights for Carinthia, the onset of World War II, with a particular emphasis on the construction of the tunnel and the associated road, smuggling across the border, and the independence war in 1991. The events are presented based on scientific literature, archival material, popular science articles, and testimonies of individuals involved in the events. The aim of the thesis is to outline the significance of border areas, particularly Ljubelj, for local and national history, and to place it within a broader historical context.
