Abstract

Title:APLICATION AND TOXICITY OF GALLANT SOLIDER (Galinsoga parviflora)
Abstract:
Gallant solider (Galinsoga parviflora Cav.) is an annual herb which is in Slovenia most commonly found on cultivated agricultural land and is therefore known as a pesky weed. It is a part of the Asteraceae family and is found on all continents except Antarctica. It's original homeland is Peru. Many ancient cultures around the world have been using this plant for medicinal and culinary purposes. Several compounds have been isolated and determined which are beneficial for human health. These compounds were found useful for treating cancer, preventing inflamation, curing fungal infections as well as bioremediation of soils contaminated with potentialy toxic metals. The aim of my B.SC. thesis was to describe the aforementioned bioactive compounds and explore the possibilities of their aplication in human health and the betterment of human society as a whole. Furthermore my work also contains a chapter dedicated to antinutritional compounds in the Gallant solider which are poisonous in high doses. One of these compound are also alkaloids which can cause liver or other organ failiure and are procarcinogens. A special chapter is designated to the description of Gallant solider's use in agronomy.
