This contribution deals with the categorisation of spoken text genres from the listener’s perspective on the basis of contemporary views of communication. Some relevant criteria are presented for understanding the difference between listening and reading on the one hand and between the listener’s and the speaker’s perspective on the other. These are: the channel, the listener’s role, preceding preparation of the text, and the listener’s purpose and response. Finally, we discuss how these criteria determine the text and how they could contribute to the definition of text genres.
