Abstract

Title:Violence against women during armed conflicts: The case of Russian-Ukrainian war
Abstract:
Gender-based violence includes many types of violence that cause physical, psychological, or sexual harm to women. This also includes child sexual abuse, rape, stalking, and domestic violence. Such violence is a global health and development problem that is being addressed by many organizations. It is based on the power imbalance between the sexes and the social norms that support it. During armed conflicts, women and girls are often victims of various forms of violence, including sexual violence. Sexual violence in war is used as a tactic to terrorize individuals, break up communities, and control the ethnic makeup of the next generation. The consequences of sexual violence can be physical, psychological, and economic and have a devastating effect on women and communities. Many laws and non-binding legal acts deal with the issue of gender-based violence during armed conflicts. In Ukraine, gender-based violence is a serious problem, as Russia uses sexual violence as a deliberate tactic of warfare. The victims of this type of violence are mainly women and minors. Ukraine's legislation on gender-based violence is flawed, making it difficult to prosecute criminals and help the victims. Humanitarian and non-governmental organizations play an important role in ensuring security and helping the victims. The healthcare sector is also crucial in conquering this problem, but due to the ongoing conflict, it is overburdened and often does not provide adequate support to the victims.
