Abstract

Title:Relative energy deficit syndrome among young Slovenian athletes
Abstract:
The study of 150 athletes investigated Relative Energy Deficit Syndrome in Sports PThe research focused on the development of a new screening tool for detection of REDs in young athletes using machine learning, the assessment of eating habits and energy nutrient intake, and the investigation of the causes of the occurrence of problematic low energy availability (LEA). The results showed that 87 % of male athletes had symptoms or signs associated with REDs, with a significantly higher incidence in female athletes (91 %). In 71% od athletes diagnostic criteria for REDs were fulfilled. Most of the athletes did not cover their energy and nutrient needs with dietary intake. 17.7 % of young and 10.8 % of elite athletes lost body weight in the last month. Research supports the need to integrate nutritional risk screening as a key part of athletes' routine health screenings and use modern technologies, such as machine learning, to identify health risks in a more targeted manner.
