The subject of this dissertation are two Serbian uprisings in 1804 and 1815. The thesis deals with the main historiographical dilemmas based on the relevant literature. The thesis describes what characteristics were attributed to the uprisings by earlier historiography of the 19th century and how the views on whether it was a peasant, or a national uprising developed over time in historiography. The thesis also addresses the wider historiographical dilemma of when the Serbian nation existed, and the challenges that historians still face in interpreting and critically evaluating both uprisings.
