In my thesis, I have researched a language phenomenon named Spanglish, which originated primarly following the historic signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the subsequent sale of Mexican territory to United States of America. Consequently, Spanish speaking people found themselves in a English-speaking region. This led to the spontaneous mixing of the two languages, eventually resulting in the creation of Spanglish, a blend of English and Spanish. The father of Spanglish, Salvador Tió, considers that this is a language which can be learned quickly, because it arises from the blending of two cultures. Predominantly, the speakers are the ones who dictate the evolution of a language, because they are the ones who form it. In the thesis, I discuss the language rules and usage of Spanglish, illustrating also the current linguistic situation.
