Abstract

Title:The influence of utilizing environmentally friendlier fluxes on slag properties : diploma work
Abstract:
In the thesis, we investigated the influence of fluxes on the properties of slag in the process of secondary metallurgy of steels. In our research we compared fluxes based on aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and fluorite (CaF2). The first part of the thesis defines the technological importance of slag in high-quality steel production and how adding fluxes significantly affects its chemical and physical properties. The second part presents three differently formed slags, which we analysed and compared using microscopic and microanalytical methods. The examined slag was taken in the process of secondary metallurgy during vacuum treatment, just before the steel was cast. We compared both the microstructure and chemical composition of the fluxes and the resulting slag. The research was conducted using an electron microscope and an XRF spectrometer. The main goal of the thesis is to determine the influence of utilizing environmentally friendlier fluxes on the properties of secondary metallurgy slag. By substituting fluorite with alumina - based fluxes in the technological process, the emission of fluorine, which is hazardous to health and the environment, is reduced.
