Discussing functional variety from a language system point of view is certainly not the most modern approach to linguistic, but in reflecting on thepresentation in dictioanries of lexical units (words and idiomatic expressions) it is hard to avoid, unless we can offer a valid alternative route to the acquisition and transmission of information on the semantics and pragmatics of dictionary entries. The publication of the trial volume of the Frazeološki slovar slovenskega jezika (Phraseological dictionary of Slovene) (2003) provides an appropriate opportunity to examine the semantic and pragmatic status of dictionary entries and their relation to similar information in the Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika (Dictionary of Standard Slovene (1971-1991) and in the dictionary part of Slovenski pravopis (Slovene orthograpy) (2001). Further verification can then be made against in Fida corpus of Slovene.
