Abstract

Title:The Effect of the Medium on Students’ State of Mind When Solving a Physics Actvity
Abstract:
The mood of students when solving physics activities is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the learning process. The purpose of the study is to determine, with the help of the flow theory, to what extent the perception of task difficulty depends on the medium and to what extent the state of flow is reached depending on the medium. An existing activity, involving multiple choice questions and open-ended questions on Newton's laws, was adapted for two media (paper, computer). Three versions of the activity were used: a paper-based activity and its computer-based counterpart, as well as a computer version where experiment descriptions were enriched with video clips. The study involved 157 students from one of the Slovenian grammar schools. The research results indicate that in computer-based versions, there is a higher likelihood of students reaching the state of flow and other states that are optimal for learning. It was also found that there is no noticeable difference in the success rate of solving activities based on the medium.
