It is no secret that there are a number of problematic communicative issues connected with scientific and popular scientific language in the natural sciences and other disciplines; these problems are faced not only by readers but also researchers themselves. This discussion throws light on the historical and philosophical background to today’s prevailing and historically non-coincidental form of scientific and popular scientific language, while at the same time, through a close analysis of the texts in Erjavec’s Domače in tuje živali v podobah, drawing attention to the fact that each text can only be understood in and should thus be dealt with in its unique historical context. Erjavec’s “animal images” that “stroll” between art and science are inextricably linked with the awakening self-awareness of Slovenes in the 19th century.
