Abstract

Title:Home care from the perspective of service users and caregivers at the Pristan social care institute
Abstract:
Home care and nursing in Slovenia are among the options for caring for older adults, providing a comprehensive approach to assisting and supporting elderly individuals in their home environment. Care recipients are unable to care for themselves due to age or health issues. Key actors in the home care and nursing process are caregivers, who attend to the physical, psychological, and social needs of care recipients. These caregivers are typically employed in specialized institutions such as the Pristan Social Care Institute. This thesis examines and explores home care and nursing at the Pristan Social Care Institute from the perspectives of both care recipients and caregivers. Through semi-structured interviews, I investigated how home care and nursing are conducted, the challenges and issues encountered in this process, the characteristics care recipients expect from their caregivers, and the relationships among care recipients, caregivers, and family members. The analysis of interviews revealed that care recipients value the dedication, compassion, and professionalism of their caregivers. Challenges include communication barriers, service coordination difficulties, and the need for greater individualization of care. The thesis also emphasizes the importance of establishing strong trust and relationships between caregivers and care recipients. Continuous caregiver education is crucial to ensuring high-quality care. The study found that involving and supporting family members of care recipients is essential for effective home care.
