Abstract

Title:Comparison of bleaching effects on beechwood using diferent agents : graduation thesis - higher professional studies
Abstract:
Wood as a natural material can be found in a variety of colour shades and discolourations giving the wood a special charm. However, in woodworking practice there is often a desire for lighter colour shades and higher colour uniformity.Three different bleaching agents were tested on beechwood samples: a two-component bleaching agent based on hydrogen peroxide, wood stains for application by brushing and spraying and a coating, coloured with a wood stain. By experiments with the stains and the coloured coating, we tried to achieve a bleaching effect, comparable to the effect of classic peroxide%based bleaching agent. We measured colour differences between untreated and bleached wood samples with a spectrophotometer. A pull-off test was used to evaluate effects of bleaching process on the adhesion strength of a final coating film of a surface sistem. The bleaching results of the two-component bleaching agent did not meet our expectations, however, the remaining agents resulted in different bleaching effects on wood. Adhesion strength of the coating finish was acceptable in all cases. We achieved a variety of bleaching results using different agents which can be used in woodworking production.
