Abstract

Title:Contemporary Slovenian Poetry in Austrian Carinthia
Abstract:
This master's thesis discusses selected works of contemporary Slovenian poetry in Austrian Carinthia, which are an important part of the transregional interaction space of the Carinthian Slovenian literary system. The selection includes seven poets born after 1960 and their eight poetry collections, namely Dolgo prehajanje (2015) by Maja Haderlap, Kaj smo, ko smo (2015) and Odhajanje za začetnike (2021) by Cvetka Lipuš, Tu je konec = Hier ist Schluss (2015) by Dominik Srienc, Rob krožnika in obzorje = Horizont und Tellerrand (2018) by Stefan Feinig, Smeji se naj vesolje (2016) by Aljaž Pestotnik, Ko ne pišem, me ni (2012) by Nina Zdouc and Najdeni nič (2013) by Verena Gotthardt. Based on the literary interpretation and comparative analysis, individual and common characteristics of literary works at the linguistic-stylistic and motif-thematic levels and their key conceptual orientations are presented with regard to the historical as well as current Carinthian and broader European social context. These are compared with the characteristics of contemporary Slovenian poetry, highlighting various distinctive features and specifics resulting from its connection to the Carinthian geographical area and the bilingual environment around the border. Besides the Carinthian social context, a reflection of postmodern society – characterized by pronounced individualization, pluralization of life choices, and lifelong identity transitions of subjects – is also observed, especially at the thematic and conceptual levels.

Keywords:Slovene literature, Slovene poetry, Carinthian Slovene poetry, transregional interaction space, Carinthian theme, linguistic transition, postmodern society
