Abstract

Title:Three-dimensional printing with a mixture of adhesive and wood powder : M. Sc. thesis
Abstract:
Three-dimensional printing is a new way of making real objects from a computer model. From the classical production technologies, based on the removal of the material (milling, turning, grinding) is different in that the product is formed by adding material in layers. There have been developed many technologies that are especially suitable for printing with polymers or metals. In this study we used 3D printing technology to print a mixture of adhesive and wood powder. Our intention was to adapt existing hardware (3D printer) to the extent that will allow printing a mixture of adhesive and wood powder, and to determine the optimal mix of adhesive and wood powder for optimum extrusion material and satisfactory mechanical properties of the printed product. We prepared two types of mixtures (with PVAc and UF adhesive) with different proportions of the wood powder (from 12.5% to 25%). In the first part of the study, we determined the optimal mixture of wood powder and the adhesive and the force needed for extrusion of the mixture through the nozzle of the print head. In the second part, we printed test pieces and tested for flexural strength. We have found out that the properties of the finished printed materials mainly depend on the properties of the adhesive. According to the results of research carried out we can conclude that the three-dimensional printing with a mixture of glue and wood dust is possible, but in limited sizes (mainly flat products) and with limited mechanical properties of the product.
