The task deals with the issue of the urban design of part of the city of Koper. The current condition, especially its urban design, does not meet the needs and demands of users. Because Koper is divided both programmatically and visually into several disconnected areas, the city’s spatial configuration is difficult to understand in any rational or coherent way. By assigning value and proposing upgrades to the existing urban condition, it is argued that the quality of any future city expansion might be improved by reference to a more methodical analysis of its urban context. The conceptual design is based on the principles of Mediterranean city development, the history of Koper, and a detailed analysis of its location. By offering a contemporary interpretation of the selected principles, the task presents a conceptual methodology for the expansion of the city of Koper into the area of the former Stanjonski Bay. The design proposal connects spatially separated and functionally disparate areas, such as the old town centre and Škocjanski zatok, with a focus on enhancing its identity as a Mediterranean city.
