Fear of missing out on sexual experiences (sex FoMO) is a popular phenomenon that is often mentioned in popular articles and discussions in the public. The aim of this master’s thesis was to examine the concept of fear of missing out on sexual experiences and its associations with personality traits and sexual behaviours. We expected that certain personality traits would predict casual sex and fear of missing out on sexual experiences, and that fear of missing out on sexual experiences would predict casual sex. We also expected a mediating role of fear of missing out on sexual experiences between certain personality traits and casual sex. Participants were 496 emerging adults who completed questions about casual sex, an adaptation of the Fear of Missing Out Scale – Personal FoMO and the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire 50-CC. The results showed that certain personality traits (neuroticism-anxiety, impulsive sensation seeking, sociability and aggression-hostility) predicted casual sex. In addition, neuroticism-anxiety and impulsive sensation seeking predicted fear of missing out on sexual experiences. We also found differences in the expression of fear of missing out on sexual experiences according to gender and partnership status. Contrary to expectations, we did not find an association between fear of missing out on sexual experiences and casual sex, nor a mediating role of fear of missing out on sexual experiences. The results on the role of personality and demographic variables are important for understanding which individuals are more likely to experience fear of missing out on sexual experiences and for planning support and education.
