The theoretical introduction of the thesis deals with the characteristics of part-time work in the Slovenian territory, and then focuses on part-time work and the right to work part-time due to parenthood. Particular attention is paid to work-life balance, which is often cited as one of the key reasons or purposes for the existence and exercise of this right. In addition to gender (in)equality, it also focuses on the advantages, disadvantages and policy improvements in the area of part-time work (due to parenthood).
The study aims to answer research questions on experiences with the right to work part-time due to parenthood, reasons for using this right, the financial aspect and impact of the Centers for Social Work, as well as proposals for change.
Through qualitative research and a non-randomized ad-hoc sample of 13 mothers, my main findings are that the decision to use the right between partners depends on a number of factors, including the type of work and working hours, the level of pay, and how involved they are with the children, with some mothers also involving their employer in the decision-making process. The interviewees were very satisfied with their experience, as the shorter working hours gave them more time with their families, less stress from rushing around and easier balancing work and private life. For some, finances did not change much due to social transfers and other reasons, while for others the change was too great to continue using the right. The proposals made by them to change the scope of the right to work part-time due to parenthood mainly concern the extension of the right in legislation.
