The paper treats the dynamics of translating Slovenian short prose into German, with a special emphasis on the period since Slovenian independence, and analyses the role of mediators, translators and editors. On the basis of the latest independent translations of both timeless masters (Cankar) and modern prose writers, an attempt is made to determine the causes of the (non-)appearance and (non-)publication of particular authors in the German-speaking countries. Through the selected examples (Andrej Blatnik), an attempt is also made to investigate the seemingly incomprehensible transformations that Slovenian texts undergo when transposed into German.
