Abstract

Abstract:
When examining the health state of young horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) trees in Cesta v Mestni log street, Municipality of Ljubljana, open sunscorch wounds along the trunks were observed above the ground. In April, 2009 seven trees were cut and the detailed research on the symptoms was carried out to establish the intensity and importance of specificinjuries to the trees. Computer asisted image analysis was used for tree cross section area measurements of infected and non-infected wood tissuesin stem disks. Moisture content of infected and non-infected wood tissues was also measured. According to our observations 97 % of trees in Cesta v Mestni log is affected by sunscorch. Analysis revealed that two typical forms of wounds develop along the tree trunks. The first form developswhen bark and cambium dies and flakes away from wood so open wounds develop. The second form develops when the bark is still attached to the wood but is more or less damaged (cracked). Several different morphological types of bark develop on trunk which probably represents different development stages of bark injuries. Injuries are less common in the crown area but enchase going down the trunk. Infected discolored wood represents as high as 60 % of the cross section area. Extremely high variability is shown in moisture content of infected wood tissues.
