This thesis presents the collections of spatial data used in monitoring of thesituation in natural environment as well as in the management of agricultural and forest land (Corine Land Cover, GERK, and stand maps). As thebasis for their analysis, they used forest management plans, stand maps of FMU Grosuplje, and the local land use map. Various types of naturally overgrowing land were discussed that had been inventorised in the field, and the characteristics of forest edges were established at the same time. The greatest number of naturally overgrowing land parcels was inventorised in the central part of Grosuplje. Using visual interpretation of orthophoto images, various categories of naturally overgrowing land were presented in the GIS ArcMap program tool. Colour and near infrared digital orthophoto images from 2006 were compared and the level of reliability of capturing these land parcels and landscape elements in data collections of forestry and agricultural experts was assessed. It was found that on the basis of new digital orthophoto images with detailed spatial resolutions it will be possible to reliably assess the changes in forest edge and landscape elements in 10-year periods, as well as over shorter time periods especially in case ofnecesity to report on spatial surface changes.
