Abstract

Title:Psychophysical abilities to drive beyond the age of 80
Abstract:
The population of Slovenia is identified as a highly aged population. According to projections for the year 2050, the proportion of individuals aged 80 years and older will reach as high as 12,6 % of the total population. With the increasing number of these individuals, a higher number of elderly drivers is also expected. Driving is crucial for seniors to maintain their independence; however, they face limitations that may affect traffic safety. Driving abilities are a complex combination of perception, cognition, and motor skills, all of which decline with age. Generally, the integration of psychophysical abilities is essential for safe and efficient driving. The master’s thesis focuses on perceptual speed and response time. Data collection involved psychological testing of individuals over 80 years old in the Gorenjska and Osredjeslovenska regions. Percentiles were then calculated to allow the comparison with future studies. The results showed that better perceptual speed is associated with shorter response times. Increasing age and gender of the elderly did not influence the length of response time, while gender influenced perceptual speed. It was also revealed that perceptual speed decreases with increasing age.
