This M. A. thesis titled Slovenian Narodnozabavna glasba and Comparable Features Relating Traditional and Popular in the Nearby European Space is an attempt of presenting Slovenian folk-pop music genre Narodnozabavna glasba in connection to other comparable musical genres within central and southeastern Europe which are marked by mixing of traditional and popular music elements. Definitions of »traditional« and »popular« are followed by a multi-layered presentation of Narodnozabavna glasba, from a historical overview to its modern image, including musical and non-musical characteristics. Narodnozabavna glasba is further presented in comparision with seven other popular music genres that contain some traditional elements and have comparable status in other countries. These are, in alphabetical order, Arabesk (Türkiye), Chalga (Bulgaria), Manele (Romania), Novokomponovana narodna muzika (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina), Turbofolk (Serbia, Slovenia), and volkstümliche Musik (Austria, Germany, Switzerland). Despite notable musical differnces between Narodnozabavna glasba and the majority of the mentioned genres, comparable processesrelated to the urbanization shifts, dynamics of change, and hibridities create fertile ground for a comparative study. The mentioned genres are presented for the first time in such a way in the Slovenian academic space.
