The master thesis focuses on accessibility, inclusion and user experience of Co-operative Online Bibliographic System and Services – COBISS. To be more precise, on mobile application of Virtual library of Slovenia – mCOBISS. The aim of our research was to discover the state of user experience and accessibility (with the upgrade to inclusion) within the app and where in the process of using the most common functionalities, in connection to mentioned areas, problems occur. Based on the obtained results, the main goal was to address these issues and plan and design the upgraded user interface.
Based on the Human-centered design approach, we performed research methods that included users (usability testing, user interview and user experience questionnaire). While others were carried out independently with the help of automated tools and manual research (testing with Accessibility Scanner, Heuristic evaluation, testing with the use of assistive technology). Next, we prioritized issues and created user personas. This was followed by the planning and designing the updated user interface (sketches, wireframes, design system, prototyping), and re-evaluation (usability testing and user experience questionnaire) for the final application comparison.
Research results showed below-average results of the overall impression of the current app, mainly in the areas of stimulation and novelty. Most issues about user experience were connected to selective search and the least to checking library location. The most issues found with Heuristic evaluation were with heuristics no. 5 (error prevention), 4 (consistency and standards) and 2 (match between the system and the real world). The most problematic accessibility issues were about the touch targets. Operating systems Android and iOS offer many built-in assistive technologies, mostly for people with visual disabilities. However, most of these only work partially on the mCOBISS application (only for certain elements or languages). Inclusion is the area that is still developing and there are currently no standardized research methods in the field of user experience. That is why we only prepared recommendation for upgrading the app. By evaluating the prototype of the updated application, we found out that the overall user experience of the application has improved in all areas. The most significant improvement has been visible for parameters attractiveness and perspicuity.
