Abstract

Title:
The right to medical assistance in dying
Abstract:
The master thesis presents opinion of social workers and health workers on the right to medical assistance in dying. In the theoretical part the right to dying with dignity, palliative and hospice care are described as well as the current regulations of this field in Slovenia are explained. Furthermore, medical assistance in dying is presented and an overview of regulations and legislation on this field in countries around the world is made, as well as the status of medical assistance in dying in Slovenia is presented. Thematic Analysis as a research method was used. Since the opinion about medical assistance in dying was acquired through transcription of interviews. A partially structured interview was used to gather the data. The sample included five health workers and five social workers who work in a nursing home. In the research we were interested in their view on medical assistance in dying, what ethical dilemmas they might have and where they think social work would fit on this field. We have come to the conclusion that social and health workers support the right to medical assistance in dying in case a person has terminal illness with immense suffering and there is no other treatment option. However, the individual must decide for the process himself. Interviewers believed that in Slovenia we are not ready to enact the Act of assistance in voluntary end of life yet, in order to avoid abuse. From this we can conclude, interviewers were most concerned about the regulation of legislation and the potential for abuse. Interviewers also mentioned religion and economic exploitation as ethical dilemmas. Based on the conducted interviews can be concluded that social work as the discipline can be seen as the support network for terminally ill people and their relatives facing the loss.
